Leon Victor Dupre Miniature Venus on Ivory Painting

An extremely fine miniature painting on ivory of a sleeping naked Venus, signed Dupré and fitted in an oval glazed picture frame. Leon Victor Dupré was a French painter (1816-1879). He was the youngest brother of the famous Jules Dupré and is considered to have been as good an artist as him.

He started his career in his father's porcelain factory, learning the exacting skills for minute detail. Dupré was awarded several medals in Salons during his long and prolific career. Most of his miniature subjects are portraits and it is most unusual to find a nude.
